Activist and Educational Workshops in NDG This Fall

Updated: Nov 27, 2023

We've got a ton of activities planned so that we can gather and have fun together during this chilly month! November is also Gender-Based Violence Awareness month here at Women on the Rise, and we have several cativities planned to explore the ongoing struggles against gender-based violence in 2023. We will be closed for part of December, so make sure you note it on your calendars!

New Groups to Join!

Stronger Together Conjugal Violence Support Group 🦋

At this support group, we collectively strive to uphold a safe(r), judgment-free space for support and discussion on a variety of topics related to conjugal violence such as the violence itself, trauma, resilience, and the process of recovery. The group consists of 2-hour sessions on Monday nights (6:30 - 8:30 pm) at a wheelchair accessible location in NDG. Each week alternates between a French session and an English session. The English group is currently full and we are adding folks to the waiting list. The French group still has a couple of spots left so please help us spread the word! For more information please call or email us.

Women Power Action Group ⚡

This club is for women and gender-diverse folks who want to make a difference! We will exchange ideas about current events and social concerns, and collectively build strategies to take on injustices we witness in our day to day lives. Hosted by our amazing facilitator Estefania Vargas, the group will be full of learning opportunities, guest speakers, and creative projects. New participants are always welcome! Childcare available with advance notice.

Raising Awareness of Gender-Based Violence and Economic abuse

This month we'll be having conversations about gender-based violence and spreading awareness about economic/financial abuse. The financial aspects of abuse are often forgotten in conversations about abusive relationships, despite how common it is. The Canadian Centre for Women's Empowerment notes: "Nearly all survivors of GBV (Gender-Based Violence) experience Economic Abuse (94-99%)." By discussing money management and its unique importance for people experiencing abuse or coercion, we hope you'll gain a better understanding of how to support yourself and others. We greatly value the exchanges of information that often happen during our workshops, so whether you have questions or advice, we hope you'll add your thoughts.

Women's Health Series: Bladders and Bowels 💩

The latest edition of our women's health programming in collaboration with the Eva Marsden Centre is focusing on two body parts that many of us are embarrassed to talk about, our urinary bladders and our bowels. Poop and pee are generally not considered polite topics of conversation, but when it comes to our health, they're really important! Join us at 1 pm on Wednesday, November 22nd in the Monkland Community Centre to get the conversation started.

Office Closures in December

Our centre will be closed from December 20th, 2023, to January 15th, 2024, inclusively. We will update our website and social media with different resources to consult while we are out of the office.
