Free Family Activities in NDG This Summer, July 2023

Updated: Jul 25, 2023

Our neighborhood is buzzing with activity, summer camps are in full swing, and Women on the Rise is gearing up for six weeks of unforgettable fun. We've got lots of outdoor activities planned, as well as more relaxed indoor activities. Keep reading to find out the highlights.

our July 2023 calendar includes distribution room sessions on Monday and Wednesday mornings, indoor activities on Tuesdays, and outdoor field trips on Thursdays. Our centre will be closed on Fridays in July.

Nature Walk in the Falaise Saint Jacques and other Thursday Field Trips

Every Thursday for the next six weeks, WOR will be going on a field trip! Make sure you dress for the weather, and bring a water bottle and snacks. Depending on where we're going, you might also need sunscreen and bug repellent.

July 6th is a nature walk in the Falaise Saint Jacques near Quilles G Plus-- it's a special spot, because it is a former garbage dump that has been rehabilitated back to nature almost exclusively by volunteers. For decades people would throw their used tires and broken appliances there, but in the last several years, UrbaNature has coordinated many local volunteers who have worked hard to remove the built-up garbage and welcome plants and wildlife back into the area. Now there are trees and wildflowers to enjoy, thanks to people in our community who were ready to roll up their sleeves and make a lasting difference. Collaboration with Eva Marsden Centre and Monkland Community Centre

We have two special Wednesday activities in collaboration with the Eva Marsden Centre for Social Justice and Aging, on July 12th and July 26th. Both of these activities will take place at the Monkland Community Centre, 4410 Avenue West Hill. The closest cross street is Monkland. The Monkland Community Centre is a wheelchair-accessible space. If you need more detailed information about accessibility you can contact the Centre at 514-872-8588.

Indoor Activities at the Centre

Tuesday activities will take place at Women on the Rise from 1 to 3 pm as usual. On July 11th and 25th we've got special guests coming to read with us, and on July 18th we're playing bingo, a long-time favourite of WOR participants.

Distro Room Sessions

Our incredible volunteers will continue to come in on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 1 pm to sort and receive donations, organize the Distro Room, and welcome visitors who come to pick up clothes and toys. If you have items you'd like to donate, please bring them by during this time!

Post-Partum Mental Health Support Group

The Post-Partum Mental Health Support Group will take place at the Monkland Community Centre this summer. While it is called the "post-partum" support group, our facilitator Millie Tresierra has many years of experience providing perinatal support--whether you are still pregnant, you've experienced miscarriage or infant loss, or you gave birth a few years ago, you are welcome at this support group. We are still looking for new participants, so if you're interested, then come on by! Our fabulous childcare provider Desrean McFarlane will be there to watch over kids and babies aged 0-5 during the sessions.

Administrative Days on Fridays

Our centre will be closed to the public on Fridays this summer, but our office will remain open to receive calls and emails. This modified summer schedule will ensure that we can continue serving the community as best as we can.
